I got to talking with a friend about permaculture in Great Britain and it kind of snowballed from there...

These are permaculture design principles. They can help figure out how to build a mini-ecosystem.

Here is a handbook for Midwest North America tree guilds. Some of these, like oak and ash, will grow in many parts of the world; and a fruit tree guild can be customized for anywhere.

Name: [personal profile] nsfwords aka Brandy

Location: Mid-Michigan. Recently updated to USDA hardiness zone 6a.

Lot size: 0.40 acres of land in the suburbs, which is quite a change for this farm girl from the thumb. But, the yard backs up into an 8 acre county drainage ditch park, with a paved nature trail, so it's like I bought the woods for free!

I garden by "yard" - as in I've broken my land into vague chunks or areas, named them all, and now I'm doing different things with each one. Let me introduce you to my yards! Pic heavy post to follow:

I worried that the garden supplies site I ordered from was a scam. But I found no negative comments online, it was an https site, it had a decent privacy section among all of its boilerplate policies, and it took PayPal: I trust PayPal for protection.

It was the great price for the item (a crop cage for my blueberries) that was borderline suspicious: not ‘too good to be true’ but so close. ‘Click click’ and I thought “Nice, I’ll get this in a week or so.”

The order confirmation was eyebrow raising, without site letterhead, the payee was an individual and not ‘the site,’ and I was *sigh* “Let’s see how this pans out.”

Cutting to the chase: after not getting any responses to my multiple inquires, over time, concerning the order progress, I submitted a claim against the site to PayPal, and PayPal refunded my $98 within minutes. Damn!

Thank you, PayPal. FU gardencheapest dot com!

Cicadas are hatching! I've seen a few hatch earlier, but this morning after the rain there are lots of them. The biggest concentration is around the forest garden and edges of the patio. :D These are red-eyed cicadas, technically periodical cicadas. Their carapaces are almost hard, their wings fully extended but still too soft to fly. It's a feast for everything that eats insects. Humans can eat them too. (I'm not planning to try that.) Usually what we get here are various types of the larger green cicadas, like the dog-day cicadas.

For maximum birdwatching benefits, keep an eye out on mornings after a rain. Once the nymphs shed their shells, they are soft and vulnerable. Many birds eagerly feast on them.

I waited too long to send in my soil sample this year, so I decided to roll the dice and just go ahead and fertilize/lime loosely based on recommendations from an old analysis: 40#/1000 sq ft 5-10-10, but just 25#/1000 sq ft with the lime. I’ll watch the plants and adjust if necessary, or possible. Here’s hoping!

After adding the amendments on Saturday, I rototilled again. Today I marked out rows, raked the soil smooth, and planted two packages of Progress #9 peas.

Peas are the far row.

Last year I planted our Bonnie veggies too early, mid-May, and had to deal with frost. This year I’ll buy the plants around or after May 18th and wait until Memorial Day weekend to put them in. In the interim the soaker hoses need to get readied and placed. So much fun!

While finishing up today I realized I had company of sorts.

More precisely, gardening! Lots of raking and trimming were needed in the garden in preparation for rototilling. The tractor wouldn’t start, of course, without a bit of persuading (cleaned up the starter/Bendix and charged the battery). That being done I was able to haul a couple of loads of detritus off to the woods.

Next came the rototiller. When pulling off the blower to clean/oil the ratchet-clutch, I found it had housed mice over the winter. I blew out the grasses, fur, and hickory nut shells, and then got the ratchet-clutch in order: this part is notorious for hanging up on the crankshaft and damaging the pull-cord assembly. I reassembled all, cleaned up the spark plug, added some Sea Foam to the old gasoline before topping off with last Fall’s stabilized fuel, and my 38 year old little Pony started on the first pull! Love this machine :o)

Smaller garden, primarily for pumpkins.

Larger garden, for everything else.

I still need to get a soil sample off to UConn for testing. I also have to finish cleaning the outside perimeter ground level below the electric fence, and replace some of the insulators. Slow and steady.

Today I finished the hugelkultur pot. (See Part 1 and Part 2.) I still have the second one to fill, but this one is done for now. \o/

Today I started on my hugelkultur pot project. The pot is about 21" at the outside top, 18" at the inside top, 16" tall, and 10 1/2" at the base.

I've been thinking about how I wanted to fill it. I didn't want to use all potting soil because sometimes it's too heavy and other times too light. I didn't want to use gravel or ceramic shards for drainage because eventually I'll want to dump it and refill it. So I hit on the idea of using sticks as the bottom layer, because they'll make good drainage but can also break down over time. Also, I love the idea of using things from my yard. A key rule of permaculture is "Obtain A Yield," and that can be anything you find useful. In this case, I'm using cut brush to improve drainage, so it's productive rather than just a pile of branches in the way of the lawnmower. I'll be adding leaves, compost, and potting soil later.

Hugelkultur is a type of no-turn compost similar to lasagna gardening where you make a pile of stuff, only this version can include anything from sticks to whole trees on the bottom. Eventually the wood decomposes.

A floodle is a giant puddle that forms in a low spot on relatively flat land. In some areas, they may only last a few hours or days, but in others they can last for weeks or even months. It depends on the soil composition, water table, and whether or not more rain falls. They can be natural, or because of human foolishness.
