Name:
nsfwords aka Brandy
This is a large hill to the North of the house that used to be a septic field before the house was tied into the city sewer line.
Before - I don't have any pics from 2021 when we bought the house, because this yard was boring and had nothing happening. These pics are from 2023 when I foraged a young Eastern Redbud tree and transplanted it just past the telephone pole guide wires.

After - Nothin' much has changed in 2024, but the little Redbud is doing well! This yard has "Ditch" Lily, Red/Yellow Daylily, and Rosa Bellini Daylily around the telephone pole in addition to the Eastern Redbud tree.

The Hill Yard
On the South side of the house is a narrow yard between us and the next door neighbors that is flat for half the length of the house then does a steep dive into the backyard.
Before - there was nothing much over here but our balcony and a chain link fence. Our yard is a luscious mix of friendly weeds that look beautiful in spring and smell great when I mow! There are also a few frenemies I'm regularly battling - like garlic mustard, bindweed, poison ivy, wild grape vine, Virginia creeper.

After - I've added a lot over here, but don't have any good pics. I took a couple yesterday, but this yard looks better in Spring/Early Summer. This yard has classic purple lilac, white lilac, spiderwort, forsythia, a wild strawberry bed, rhubarb, iris pallida, grape hyacinth, white hyacinth, poet's daffodil, and a random double daffodil I foraged from an abandoned lot.

The Garage Yard
This is a bit of a grassy area between the garage and the Back Yard that isn't very interesting, but mostly I want to show you our Garage Door Glow-Up!
Before - pretty standard fare.

After - In 2023 we hired a local muralist who specializes in Garage Doors, and got this Morel Forest at Sunset! It inspired us to also paint all our other exterior doors a matching red, since the front door was already a faded red, and Husbando loved it. This yard has pots with Geraniums, vinca, Grandpa Ott's morning glory, Clark's Heavenly Blue morning glory, and chicks n' hens.

The Backyard
Our final yard is actually the majority of our land, and was the #1 reason I bought this house. Its twice as deep as all our neighbors, so is surrounded by woods on 3 sides and feels very secluded.
Before - beautiful potential in the fall of 2021.

After - We've mostly done Yard Destruction back here, because the house was empty for 5 years before we bought it, and the woods were taking over completely! Here's a view from the Maypole back, and another just good summer overall view. This yard has Maple, Oak, Box Elder, Apple, Cherry, Weeping Willow, Catalpa, Black Walnut, American Plum, Pecan, and Butternut trees. The yard also has poison ivy, bindweed, wild grape vine, Virginia Creeper, black raspberry, autumn olive, jack-in-the-pulpit, great white trillium, Dutchman's breeches, wood poppy, lily of the valley, and multiflora roses in abundance.

Thanks for looking at my yard! Enjoy the bonfire!

Location: Mid-Michigan. Recently updated to USDA hardiness zone 6a.
Lot size: 0.40 acres of land in the suburbs, which is quite a change for this farm girl from the thumb. But, the yard backs up into an 8 acre county drainage ditch park, with a paved nature trail, so it's like I bought the woods for free!
I garden by "yard" - as in I've broken my land into vague chunks or areas, named them all, and now I'm doing different things with each one. Let me introduce you to my yards! Pic heavy post to follow:
The Front Yard
This is the part that I need to keep really tidy for the neighbors. Luckily, its the smallest yard.
Before - a listing photo from when we bought our house in Summer 2021. (These photos have been lightly edited to remove our address.)

After - pics from yesterday showing all my lovely containers. This yard has a burning bush, a purple hydrangea, white peony, an azalea, two fuchsia knockout roses, red & yellow tulips, snow crocus, snow glories, and the pots full of geraniums, vinca, and sunpatiens.
