Summer is underway here and it's not raining so much like it did last year. The raspberries are producing well, daylilies are blooming, and the main colors are provided by monarda, mallow and lady bells. Lilies are also blooming.

How many raspberry canes/plants do you have? Is there a particular breed that works well in your climate?

I have black raspberries, and if they are a particular breed, that knowledge was lost. I suspect they may be an unimproved raspberry--I sort of allowed them to crawl into my yard and they may have escaped from here prior to my arrival (these are urban lots and there's a back corner that's a bit of abandoned, and some raspberries only need distain to survive.) I say they may have escaped because prior to the previous owners the property had gardeners. The three yews were explained as having been raised from seedlings--all are male (no danger berries!)

Quantifying them is difficult. Last year was very rainy and I didn't rein in the stools of raspberry as I meant to. Later in the month I'll be clipping out everything that fruited and then I'll see how I'm situated for next year. I've got many feet of raspberry run though. This year there have been plenty of the thimble/thumb sized ones. Rabbits like to shelter under them during the winter, and that fertilizes them very well with pellets.

Oddly, my neighbor has some purchased red raspberry plants and they just aren't the sort of producers mine are. They are better behaved (I don't use a whip and chair on mine...) and they are fewer plants.
