  1. What was the most sick that you've ever been?

I came down with flu when Keiki was about 4 months old. That is the most ill I've been in my adult life. I could hardly get out of bed and my temperature was over 40 C for several days. Runner up would be the ear infection I had when I was 11, which was so bad my teacher found me lying on the concrete floor of the playground because my ear was too hot. It was the middle of winter.

What disease are you afraid of getting?

All of them, but mostly: Dementia.

Are you a big baby when it comes to taking medicine/shots for your illnesses?

No. I am a big fan of medical intervention for illness and pain.

Is going to the doctor really THAT bad?

Not at all, it's just time-consuming, which is why I tend to put it off.

Would you have the flu twice a month if you were paid $1,000 for having it?

Assuming “the flu” really does mean influenza and not a bad cold, absolutely not. Genuine flu is completely debilitating. It took me two weeks to recover from the bout I had in Answer 1. This scenario would mean being continuously sick. No thank you.

Today is cloudy, mild, and damp -- so cloudy that the light is dim.

I fed the birds.  I've seen a few sparrows and house finches plus a pair of cardinals.

I put out water for the birds.

It's starting to drizzle.

I SAW A BLUE JAY AT HOME!

Sorry, needed to get the most important news out first. I have been deeply jealous of work, where there are a bunch of blue jays* swinging by on a regular basis to harass people on the patio. In eleven years at my home, I have never seen a blue jay here. But yesterday, while out cleaning the corrals, I saw one flitting about. Looked fluffy and vaguely juvenile. I hope it sticks around. I may be one of the few people who is actually happy at the prospect of jays coming around to pester.

*For those not in California, I am referring to the California scrub jay, Aphelocoma californica, not the variety seen in the eastern portions of the continent, though both are colloquially referred to as blue jays. Still a corvid, still a beautiful blue bastard.

Anyway! Work was boring; I have resorted to reading library books on my phone at my desk. Complained to my boss that all the things I’m allegedly meant to be doing are either swept up by other people or locked behind the endless bureaucracy of waiting on approvals or support from people who don’t appear to ever do anything at all. I don’t actually like being this bored, with or without library books on my phone. I did get to do some wall patching and painting, though, so that was a relief.

Lewisia: 2 new pieces written, so now I’m a full week ahead ヽ(✿゚▽゚)ノ

Day job: 42.5 hours--a normal week???

Cooking: pineapple swirl milk bread (no recipe beyond the base milk bread from KAF, completely winging the alterations and additions, turned out tasty, would make as swirl rolls a la cinnamon rolls next time)

Gardening: more work on the club’s barcode database, garden club post, had a tree branch fall nearly on my car so had to drag that off for eventual dismantling

Watching: Murderbot season finale--premium quality entertainment 🔪🤖🖤

Listening: The Crux by Djo (very good, whatever this is called--shoegaze?--it is exceedingly pleasing for me, still hasn’t topped DECIDE but give it time to grow on me)

Clock Mouse: 1160 words

[Conclave] Ship sorter

Someone put together a ship sorter for Conclave pairings. I always find these kind of fun.

My results )
Overall, nothing shocking here, though I'm surprised that Lawrence/O'Malley ranked above Benitez/Lawrence. And also that Bellini/previous Pope turned out number 1.

I suppose my logic with ranking was, aside from whether I like a pairing or not, is whether I would find it interesting. Bellini obviously had a lot of backstory with previous!Pope; I found his grief etc in the film very compelling. The whole thing with the chess set and so on. So I guess it makes sense.

Not surprised that Adeyemi/Tremblay was #5 for me. Like, neither of them is my favourite character, but they're both such troublemakers. And while they don't have a huge amount of interaction in the film, the amount they DO have is enough to latch onto. That damn cafeteria scene, man. Adeyemi's whole thing with "Judas. Traitor." Yeah, yeah, Tedesco's iconic vape hit, we've all seen it, but the delivery of Adeyemi's line...!

My only disappointment is that Lawrence/Tremblay isn't on the ship list, because like, I DO have opinions on that, unlike some of the stuff on the list. Partially thanks to Tremblay's route in Delectatio Morosa, but also thanks to the book, in which Lomeli is so very BEC about Tremblay and his sports-newscaster-esque good looks and his perfect hair, lol.

We made it to the little market down the road for the second week running and found the first vendor we visited down to his last several boxes of raspberries, so we bought two and headed back home. First raspberries of the season!

(I think yesterday was the first time I ever actually stopped and noticed why raspberries are called that.)

Reading: In non-fiction, I'm still reading through Tamar Adler's An Everlasting Meal: Cooking with Economy and Grace.

On the fiction front, last week I read Cameron Reed's The Fortunate Fall, relatively recently (and finally!) reissued under her current name after its first life as an award-winning SFF novel under her deadname literal decades ago. (I believe her upcoming novel is her first since this one!) It didn't actually hit my emotional buttons very hard (which isn't indicative of how anyone else might react), but it's beautifully constructed and executed. I see why it's so beloved by so many people. ^_^

I also read We Are All Completely Fine (Daryl Gregory), which I didn't realize was a novella until I started reading, so it went by pretty quickly. Interesting horror worldbuilding, although other than the characters' specific histories it's almost entirely hinted at or nodded to; I, at least, came away with almost no actual idea of what's actually going on on a larger scale.

And I read the new Murderbot story ("Rapport: Friendship, Solidarity, Communion, Empathy") that Martha Wells released for the show finale (note that Murderbot itself isn't actually present in the story).

Watching: No Leverage this week, I don't think. [personal profile] scruloose and I have agreed to switch this to an "I watch this when I feel like it, and if they're around and feel like it, they'll watch with me" show rather than one we're Watching Together. They enjoy it, but don't feel a burning need to see every episode.

I kind of wonder if I haven't been started a show on my own for so long because I'm sort of subconsciously waiting to be able to watch the rest of Justice in the Dark whenever the whole thing is subbed somewhere.

We've seen the Murderbot finale, and I'm awfully glad the show's been renewed.

Beyond that, the two of us have now watched the very first episode of Silo, having had good luck with Apple SFF shows. I haven't read the books, so I know almost nothing about it.

(I have food stuff to talk about, but I think I'll call this a post and hope to write more later.)

Back in May, I picked out my health insurance provider. I looked over the plans, I looked up some doctors and such in my area, saw both plans had doctors in my area and picked out the health provider that seemed better with coverage.

I just went to book a dentist appointment and now there's no one in the area taking that health insurance??? I'm not sure what happened. Maybe I missed something? I looked it all up on the website and everything, I don't really understand. unless because it was through the state portal that it did something weird to their search website? I don't know.

now I guess I need to see if I can change health insurance providers. what the heck

eta: I think I don't have health insurance right now, fuck. the provider called me a couple times in june and I was so busy. and I looked at the state portal and it says my application was denied. frick. guess I'll call tomorrow.

Climate Change

Melting glaciers are awakening Earth's most dangerous volcanoes

As glaciers melt around the world, long-dormant volcanoes may be waking up beneath the ice. New research reveals that massive ice sheets have suppressed eruptions for thousands of years, building up underground pressure. But as that icy weight disappears, it may trigger a wave of explosive eruptions—especially in places like Antarctica. This unexpected volcanic threat not only poses regional risks but could also accelerate climate change in a dangerous feedback loop. The Earth’s hidden fire may be closer to the surface than we thought.

Somehow OH SHIT just doesn't seem like enough. O_O  I have noticed that the volcanoes seem more restless than they used to, and now wonder if this could be a contributing factor.

Today's Smoothie

Today we made a smoothie with:

1 cup almond milk
1 cup Brown Cow vanilla yogurt
3 tablespoons Bettergoods pistachio butter
a dash of cardamom

The result is off-white and on the thin side.  It tastes okay, but does not have much pistachio flavor at this stage.

The pistachio butter does have a strong pistachio flavor, but it is quite sweet; sugar is the second ingredient.  So we skipped the honey that we usually put into a nut butter smoothie.

I really want to post more, but I just forget. Or I get caught up in my projects or what I'm watching or what I'm playing.

Or, like yesterday, get brought down by a headache so bad all I can do is lay down in a dark room and do nothing for an entire evening.

So maybe I'll start by just trying to do a weekly post of what I'm up to.

- Started back up with learning Python.

- Crocheted the body and head of a small Branch (Trolls) puppet.
- Got a few rounds of a leg in for a Picard doll.

- My onions and carrots are looking good!
- I think I planted my cucumber/zucchini too close together; they've produced a handful of male flowers but that's it. And the plants themselves aren't very big.

- Up to season three of Fringe rewatch while crocheting or fishing in Minecraft.
- Made significant progress on my pyrofishing augments since the server I was in before closed down and I had to start over (I will always miss my maxed out fishing pole!)

- Trying to acquire enough materials to furnish a small house in Palia and have it look nice. But I keep throwing my plushies everywhere and tend to concentrate on my ingame garden because money.

- I want to play 7 Days to Die again but constantly starting over is getting to me.

- Got part way into Elden Ring (I'm dying a lot and am relying on my brother to carry me lol)

Movies watched:
- The Woman in the Yard
- Heads of State
- Sinners
- K-Pop Demon Hunters
- Sunshine

EDIT 7/12/25 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

It started drizzling again.

and completion of orientation. They really are taking anybody with a pulse, as judged by the extremely detailed list of instructions for appropriate behavior during orientation. I'd be more insulted, but that's good for me, I really need a job. If they had higher standards they would hire somebody with formal work experience, or at least an associate's degree.

(Don't think I've stopped applying other places, mind you, but I'm really not in a position to be picky, either.)

First off, some photographic evidence of cherry picking and meeting [personal profile] mallorys_camera!

I didn't realize, until I arrived at Samascott, that you can also rent out Surreys there. This gives me lots of Ideas for future visits.

Samascott Orchards u-pick produce

When I paid the picking entry fee and the person working there handed me the list of what's available, I was dismayed to see that cherries had been scratched off the list! After asking her about that, the person working there said, "They're pretty much gone but you can try and pick whatever you can get."

I found a couple rows of sour cherries, and this is what many of the trees looked like:

Half-picked sour cherry trees

If you look closely, you'll notice there are lots of beautiful red cherries towards the top of the tree, and basically none lower down. It looks like people went for all the easy pickins, probably over the Fourth of July weekend, leaving only the fruit towards the top. Well, dear readers, it was a good day to be a fairly tall person. And also a person willing to walk towards the end of the row.

I did try going up a ladder once, although it wasn't positioned especially well and my feet informed me that I was definitely NOT wearing shoes with metal shanks in them.

Caught in the act of picking cherries

On the other hand, I was wearing a brand-new leafcutter ant dress, and it was an excellent choice of apparel for cherry-picking on a warm summer day. (though I hesitate to recommend this particular dress to others because some of the stitching was very poorly done and I'll have to resew parts of it momentarily).

It saddened me to see that there are a lot of people who don't seem to fully grasp the concept of u-pick produce.

Don't steal produce bro

But at least we could console ourselves with ice cream. As you can see from this photo, both P and I have impeccable taste when it comes to outfits for cherry picking and/or gardening.

Cherry picking and conversation with P

After returning home, what to do with all the fruit?? I managed to pick nearly 17 pounds of sour cherries, mostly without the stems, so processing needed to commence immediately.

But also, it was Hot, hotter still because S was doing some cooking in the kitchen.

So after washing a bunch of the cherries, I retreated to the basement to pit them.

Pitting cherries in the basement

Here is what 16 pounds' worth of cherry pits looks like:
16 pounds' worth of cherry pits

Not pictured: the amount of cherry juice all over my legs and on the floor where I worked.

I saved the final pound for making some Luxardo maraschino cherries.

Making Luxardo cherries

The making of the Luxardo maraschino cherries was highly satisfying on multiple different fronts, all at once.

The first front is that I never, ever intended to buy a bottle of Luxardo in the first place! I had gone to a liquor store at some point, in search of decent kirschwasser, and the person working there pointed me at the Luxardo instead. I figured I'd take the gamble, and, dear reader, I very much lost. Luxardo is very much NOT kirsch. Good kirsch is very hard to find. Frankly, I find the Luxardo horrifyingly sweet. So, not only is is NOT kirsch, it is impossible to use in any sort of large quantity.

Except if one is making Luxardo maraschino cherries, which are cloyingly sweet by design.

Making Luxardo cherries

With this batch, I was able to finish off that damn bottle of Luxardo, for once and for all.

The second satisfying element is that Luxardo maraschino cherries call for a stick of cinnamon, and I have some top-notch cinnamon sticks from my Sri Lankan rowing teammate (who also points out that much of what gets sold as cinnamon, isn't actually cinnamon). One went in and it smelled fantastic.

Luxardo cherries

The third satisfying element is that recently, a couple other rowing teammates were discussing how one teammate's significant other is exceptionally good at mixing up Old Fashioneds. When I asked him about why he thought his Old Fashioneds were particularly good, one of his comments was that he used Luxardo maraschino cherries in them, along with other fruits.

And so! One of the two jars I made will go to him, for feedback, and also because it's satisfying to give someone exactly the Right Thing. Especially when the Right Thing contains some of the liqueur I've been wanting to get rid of for ages. A very good use for some of these cherries!

By the way, here is the recipe I used for the Luxardo maraschino cherries:

-Combined 1/2 C sugar and 1/2 C water in a saucepan, along with a cinnamon stick and 1/4 tsp nutmeg. Bring to a simmer, then add 1 pound cherries and 1 C Luxardo. Simmer for 5 minutes, then allow to cool. Put in jars and store refrigerated.

Meanwhile, some other things done with the sour cherries:

Three gallon ziploc bags into the deep freeze. Naturally, S now says he would love a cherry pie. I might be inclined to wait before turning on the oven for that project. The cherries will keep in the deep freeze until the time is right.

Pitting the cherries released some extra juice, which I recaptured, because I've learned of another fine cocktail involving cherries, from [personal profile] annikusrex, originally with Maker's Mark, ginger ale, and sour cherry juice. My modified version uses whiskey (that's what's on hand), a dry ginger ale (lower sugar), and the extra cherry juices from the pitted cherries.

Tart cherry cocktail

So refreshing!

I am also experimenting with homemade dried tart cherries. Here's how they're looking after ~18 hours in the dehydrator:

Dried tart cherry attempt

I'm really hoping the dried tart cherry experiment goes well. If it does, I could very well go back for even more sour cherries in a future year. Dried tart cherries go very well in muesli.
