Garden progress!
Jul. 12th, 2025 12:06 pmThe garden is doing well this year (mostly). We picked a couple of green peppers last week, and yesterday we got a cucumber!

This is the first time in about three years that we have female flowers and actual pumpkins!

I’ve kept up on watering, and we have had lots of rain (and heat). This is a rain gauge I bought years ago from the Edmund Scientific catalogue, via snail mail. I decided to use it again, and we had an inch of rain the other night! With all the rain I’m having trouble with fungicide and pesticide applications.
Other plants, because why not?

Japanese wineberry ( Rubus phoenicolasius): invasive, and everywhere due the birds loving them. They are delicious, though.

This is a first: spider mites! They appeared during a heat wave, and are infesting the wineberry patch next to the garden. I’ve shot them with Spinosad but it’s an uphill battle.

Spider mite damage.
And these, another first here-

I was looking for Indian Pipes (Monotropa uniflora) but found these instead: Fairy Fingers (Clavaria fragilis, perhaps)! There are two large groups of these out back.
Finally-

Morning glory! We planted a variety of colors a few years ago, and now only these purple ones come up where they will in the pumpkin patch.

Date: 2025-07-15 12:27 am (UTC)When we first planted morning glories we did the soak/split thing recommended on the package. They didn’t come up the second year. We planted more and those have been returning yearly now for about five years, but only on the pumpkin side of the garden. I love seeing them :o)
