Pawpaws

Help! I'm getting a couple of barely-rooted separated pawpaw suckers next month. What is the best way to overwinter them? I'm in US zone 5, southern NH. The host trees are not terribly far from here, same zone.

My first instinct is to pop them individually into tall pots and set them in a sheltered outdoor location until spring. Would they be better off in the (unheated) garage? How much insulation do they need? Watering schedule? Anything else? TIA.

I would think just planting them and then in Spring when they leaf out plant them in their permanent spots....or simply in their permanent spots. I remember you're supposed to give them part shade for the 1st yr or two then full sun for life(and best production). I think you need different unrelated plants for fruit.

I believe I am getting unrelated plants, will have to ask about that. Sounds like they might be best off in tall pots for the first year at least, so I can easily keep them in part shade.
