Hi. I'm not a very skilled gardener, but I'm doing bits and pieces on our suburban section. I guess the main thing that might make me different/of interest to some folks is that I'm living in New Zealand. Any other southern hemisphere gardeners in this community? This means that my seasons are reversed to a goodly amount of the rest of the world. It's winter right now, and I have recently put in some strawberry plants to allow them to establish in the cold. We have early daffodils flowering in the front of the section.

We have a section of about 780 square metres, with two apple trees and a Meyer lemon. It's all very utilitarian, and my daughter and I have experimented with a small winter vegetable garden. We had some success with silver beet (swiss chard), rocket and broccoli, and there are the aforementioned strawberry plants.

We live in a temperate zone, with cool winters, and occasional hard frosts. In the summer it can be quite hot and rather dry, as we're on the eastern side of the country. Our soil varies from slightly sandy to a moderately heavy loam. We're doing our best with our own compost but I suspect that the local garden centre will see us buying more sacks of the stuff come spring.

Some of my favourite late summer bulbs - Amaryllis (or Naked Ladies as they're also known). It's good to remember that the winter will end eventually.
