Yard Pictures: Forest Garden and Herb Gardens

These pictures are from Saturday, April 16 showing the forest garden and herb gardens.  See the house yard and orchard, south lot and west edge, forest yard and wagonwheel garden, savanna and prairie garden, and ritual meadow and flowerbeds.


This is the forest garden.


Celandine poppy and mayapples are well up.


Bluebells have flower buds.


The ephemeral stream is still flowing.


This hosta has leafed out nicely.


This wildflower is sprouting in the forest garden.


This wildflower has leafed out nicely.


Wild ginger is leafing out in the forest garden.


Recently I harvested a bunch of garlic chives for a stir-fry dish. It was my first harvest of the year. That clump has already regrown several inches.


The cistern garden is greening up nicely.


Catnip is growing in the cistern garden.


Bergamot is growing in the strip garden.


Lemon balm is growing in the strip garden.

The stream is quite pretty. Does it attract frogs?

I have not seen frogs or toads near the stream. However, last year we had more tree frogs (green ones and gray ones) than I have ever seen before. I don't know if that was a fluke or if they established critical mass. They frequently appeared on the sides of the house and the door, not far from the stream. We've had the stream for a while, but it may have contributed to the increase. We have always had a lot of common toads.
