The Early Fall Garden....
Sep. 9th, 2021 08:04 amDon't think I've posted since we relocated to a town west of Knoxville, TN. My wonderful younger brother remodeled his basement into a studio for us because he was worried about us being so far away. Th house is on a hill so we have windows(and a conservatory!) on one side. It looks out over one of the TVA reservoirs and our cove almost always hosts ducks and geese. Chuck sits out in the conservatory for hrs and watches them OR the occasional deer(which is something I have to add in in my choices around here plant wise;>!).
The biggest problem Gardening here is that the contractors dumped infill instead of topsoil in the areas the excavated. And with my health issues without help I'm going back to my Florida standby; Container Gardening....which I've already started!
I planted 3 fabric pots(7gal, I'll get larger next time I order) which are each big enough for one type of crop. The 3 are:
Chinese Bald Head Mustard(think Mustard Kohlrabi)
Mantanghong Radish(one of those "watermelon" types)
Fuku Komachi(Japanese Turnip)
I've a couple more pots so I'm planning a few more like either Polish Leeks or Japanese Onions and maybe an Asian Broccoli or Bok Choy. Too many seeds, not enough pots;>!
We're supposed to be in 7z but I've run into a number of plants that have obviously been growing for a number of seasons that are definitely 8z for we'll be doing some testing myself;>.
Two BIG issues(other than the infill) are the lack of sprinklers and/or faucets and the leach field of the septic tank which is most of the back yard. I was a big taken aback that it's almsot right up to the lakeshore but apparently that's normal here, sadly. Needless to say, with my Immune system I won't be doing any Swimming of our dock. Th local news doesn't carry the report anymore since for 3 seasons the fecal bacteria level is either at or over recommended levels and Tourism is big here(Dollywood is 40 minutes away). Nothing with deep roots can be planted pretty much everywhere in back. And I wanted a PawPaw patch;>!
Cheers,
Pat
