Whatever works is good enough. I used to plant pumpkins in tires filled with good soil (but the critters came and ate very well).
We got ambitious and revived the old garden two years ago. I never used to test the soil but it made such a difference in yields last year that I am now a believer. The tiller is a time and back saver, too.
