My hello (intro post)

I started gardening again last year after a long hiatus. This called for clearing out the old plot, felling some trees and removing scrub and whatnot, as well as reviving the dormant tiller. It’s been fun, educational, a little costly, but definitely rewarding.

I’m in Rhode Island, USA, zone 6. I’m a conventional gardener using conventional methods. Crops last year were corn, peas, tomatoes, eggplants, peppers, cukes, pumpkins, sunflowers, and gourds. This year I’ve dropped the corn and added beans, squash, and watermelon. Also, the garden was expanded this Spring to allow the ‘bullies’ (pumpkins and watermelons) room to grow, and to put in asparagus.

Looks lovely and productive!

Is the bunny wild or cultivated? And do you find yourself fighting Bambi and co for the fruits of your labours? If not, what's your repellant? (I have a friend whose gardening in a backyard has been stymied by the wildlife munching on her plants.)

The bunny is a wild child recently on its own :D He’s an elusive fellow and, unlike the adults that have grown used to me, disappears quickly when approached.  I found him looking out from the peas that day, and got a pic by the beans before I shooed him back through the fence; this is the first time a rabbit had been seen in the garden.

Deer don’t bother the plants; the four foot 2x4” wire fence keeps them out. This little rabbit got through the 2x4” openings at a full run without shaking the fence! As an interim measure I bought a gallon of Liquid Fence to keep back any of these critters, and I bought some chicken wire to run over the existing fence to discourage the kits until they are hopefully too large to squeeze through. Unfortunately it’s cheaply manufactured netting and may not work well (I got what I paid for). 


Edit: The Liquid Fence has not deterred the bunny!

Thankfully this isn’t a woodchuck problem!
