I'm a new gardener. After several years of cramming a few containers onto a tiny balcony or patio, we've just bought a house, and the first part I'm fixing up is the garden.

Part of the vegetable garden got planted yesterday. In future years I might add an auxiliary veg garden in the front yard (where there's more sun), and I definitely want to turn the south end of the back yard into a glorious woodland shade garden. Right now it's a random mix of a few bulbs, two scrawny groundcovers, and weeds galore.

On the plus side, having such a blank canvas gives you lots of flexibility! But wow, I really don't understand how non-gardeners can live with that kind of boring nothingness around their houses....
