The Late Summer Garden.....

While the Heat and Humidity has taken it's toll on me and a number of plants, others are reveling in it. My subtropical Salvias especially are going gangbusters. As soon as one flush of blossoms begin to fade I cut them back by 1/3 to 1/2. 4-6 weeks later....repeat;>!
This is my 1st yr growing Angelonias and Echinaceas and have been impressed with both, esp the latter. 'Jade', the Echinacea cultivar I'm growing is a stunner. The bright Green centre and the Greenish White petals are incredible. I know what I'll be ordering next Spring.
I've had to Summer Prune my multi Asian Pear tree to make sure all the grafts remain the same. It looks good so next Spring I'll let it produce. It's done so well I think I'll order in Fall a multi Pluot, my 3rd fav fruit after Persimmons and Asian Pears.
My Okinawan Sweet Potato vines are starting to look "tired" so I'll test Harvest in a couple of weeks. After trying this rare cultivar mult yrs without success(and I mean most didn't make it past rooting the slips) I've a large mass of vines. Almost like it's NOT Okinawan;>!
I have a new fav Japanese Imperial Morning Glory: 'Geshokku'. This trumpet of various shades of Blue from deep Sapphire to almost White with a Violet throat is stunning. It's the most vigorous AND floripherous cultivar I've grown and I've grown a LOT;>! And to add to this a 3rd of the blossoms are either all deep Sapphire OR Powder Blue.
I've 2 plants on the chopping block; a species Butterfly Ginger(ellipticum I think) and a hybrid Brugmansia. I WAS hoping that since all it got visually from it's sanguinia parent was the blossom shape but since it's still without blooms in it's 2nd yr(though the plant is 8' tall and 4' wide) I'm afraid so. B sanguinea HATES temps above 80F and we get that many mornings;>!
Cheers,
Pat
