Thanks! Good to know what the vine-thing is. I've taken to letting it dry in the sun a few days before it goes in the compost, and haven't had troubles with it taking over the bin. But that sucker just keeps coming. *shakes fist* Our winters here are hard enough that they die down, but come right back up as soon as it gets temperate again. It tried to climb my neighbor's tree last year!
The soil situation sucks; I think our landlord, when he landscaped the place, did it assuming tenants wouldn't do anything with it, maybe put in a few annuals or something. And then he got me and one of our original roommates, who were like FARMING YAY, and therefore have dug the hell out of all the beds.
