Location: northeast Kansas (zone 6a), middle USA
Yard: medium - there's an inner part bordered by a box hedge and a large outer verge with a couple big oak trees. Corner lot. Flowerbed bordering the porch.
We moved here in July 2021. The house had been owned by the same family since the 60s. The dad was the gardener and had planted hybrid tea roses, spirea, forsythia, peonies, and surprise lilies. All in slightly sad condition as he had passed some years ago. I looked at the straggly roses and wondered if it was worth the work. Gave them some water and this happened:

In the first year I really did quite a lot, including turning an awkward little strip of grass (less than 2 feet wide in most spots) left between a sidewalk & the street into a flower bed.
Previously I had mostly grown herbs in containers (I keep getting more herbs and larger containers). My oldest is a thyme.
So far this winter I have purchased my spring seeds and even decided to buy a couple more roses.
Right now I'm prepping to repot my indoor plants, which are mostly African violets. I have decided indoor repotting should be done now before spring yard cleanup begins.
