It's late summer, and it's still producing. (To be fair, I didn't cut much of it earlier in the season, and it's having a jolly good go of it now...)

There are about six asparagus plants and so far as I recall, they've all been producing spears, which is excellent (there are male and female plants, and I think it's the males that produce the spears).

If left unharvested,the spears eventually become the fluffy fern-like leaves that you can see in the picture below:

Over winter, the leaves die off, and the books I read on growing asparagus recommended chopping up the ferns and mulching the plants with them for the next season.

These asparagus have taken a few years to get to this stage - at least four years, only the last eighteen months here in this bed. But they're here now and here they will stay. Asparagus apparently produce regularly for up to twenty years, so there's hopefully at least a decade of asparagus headed our way...
