Took advantage of the good weather today.
Apr. 4th, 2011 03:24 pmTook advantage of the sun to do some garden cleanup.
Rosemary, Lavender & Lemon Balm have had their 'hair cuts', got the Chocolate Mint cleaned out too. The Chocolate Mint is sprouting nicely in its own raised bed (it took over, but shares with the Tansy). Cleaned out dead leaves & such from the Irises- might get a 'Batik' bloom this year. 'Pirate's Gold' has multiplied nicely too, rest are doing better as of right now, than they were last season (I'd just transplanted/split them the season before, they spent last season recovering).
The Greek Oregano, Thyme and Chives I transplanted from my Aerogarden 2 years ago, came back strong this season. Especially the Greek Oregano, it's tripled in size already. The Thyme is doubled. The Chives are holding their own. Now the ones that self seeded into one of the Wisteria pots is going gangbusters. The Lovage is finally doing something this year. The Spiderwort is growing great too.
Out back, the Bronze Fennel was sprouting, is about 2-3 inches tall now. The Rhubarb is going nuts. Might get some of my own homegrown stalks this season.
In that same raised bed out back, the Curry Plant overwintered well. The French Tarragon, not so much. I haven't given up on it yet, but it's not looking good. The Lemon Thyme has little shoots at the base, so it's coming back. The Garlic Chives are ready to be harvested already.
In pots I stuck back there, under the plastic 'tent' for the winter, naturally the Basil didn't survive. The Lemon Verbena isn't looking good. There's a few tiny seedlings that may or may not be self seeded from the original plant. The Anise Hyssop has shot up, it's a good 7-8" high and doing great.
There's buds on the Clematis on the fence. The ones on the side of the porch were cut back last Fall, they're sending out runners and shoots nicely. I need to clear out the English Ivy that's trying to take over that bed and plant a few more Clematis in there. The one at the top of the back hill was leafed out and going strong, last I checked. The Washington Hawthorn, Redbuds and Dogwood saplings I planted up there, I can see green leaves on, but haven't checked to see WHICH ones were leafing out.
Took some cuttings of the Forsythia from up there too, trying to get them to root so I can plant more and help fill out the windblock/screen up there.}:P It was so easy when I was a kid- dad just stuck them in a bucket and left them alone. A week later, they had roots. Well, it's been 2 weeks and nothing yet. Though they ARE sending out leaves, so maybe there's hope yet.
The False Indigo came back beautifully in the pot on the front steps. The Catmint is doing great. Got a couple inches of green on the Asiatic Lilies- need to split and plant those in the ground this year, their pot is cracked on the side. The 'Black Prince' Daylilies, along with the rest are filling out nicely. The project this spring is to build them a bed and finally get them out of their pots. Well, along with finally building a back patio this summer. AND build a raised bed out back for Heirloom Tomatoes from my favorite local nursery. Heh.
They're calling for strong thunderstorms this evening, so I need to go refill the suet feeders and get the grill covered again, before they roll in. And I think I moight have a touch of a sunburn. Ah well, it'll tan by morning.}:P
