heading for winter in Sydney
Winter planting got slightly derailed by my acquisition of a six-week job. And the late autumn plantings got disrupted by the new fence we’re putting in between our back neighbours and ourselves. As a result, all my seedlings are languishing in seedling pots too small for them, and I had to pull up the otherwise-growing-beautifully sweet potato.
I’m a bit pissed off about that, tbh.

The carrots, onions, parsnips planting from early autumn have barely moved, although the rocket among it is coming up pretty nicely.

And I planted out a bunch of bok-choy, then sprinkled crushed eggshells around it to deter slugs and snails which are a real problem for me at this time of year.

The fence before, during, and after. Sorry about the light in the ‘during’ picture, I’m leaving just as the sun comes up, so it’s kind of dark.

I’ll probably need to do a separate post for the pumpkin harvest in the next couple of weeks… :)

Good luck with the rest of your garden!

Does the crushed egg shell method work? I've never tried that.

Well, all the seedlings are still there instead of munched down... Mind you, I haven't spotted too many slugs and snails around this year. I don't know if it's just not quite the right weather (although one would think cold and wet would do it, right?) or if they're just waiting, biding their time before they burst out and eat everything in my garden. It wouldn't surprise me.
Anyway, the logic of it makes sense to me - slugs and snails like non-sharp surfaces, and ground up eggshells are most definitely edged...

Good luck, little bok-choy. May you resist the predations of gastropods.
