Most of these spears are the Mary Washington variety and came from the bed planted in 2022; we only did one cutting last year. Unlike my other crowns which were planted ‘octopus’ style, I laid this down ‘head-to-toe.’ As with the other crowns, I buried them immediately and not progressively. I’ve kept this bed as weed free as possible and fertilized early with 10-10-10.

My previous two beds, Jersey Giant in 2019 and and Mary Washington in 2020, have not done well, to the point I’ve all but given up on them. The whole garden has been underperforming the last couple of years so I’m trying to be more attentive to details this year.

And I bought these crowns online from an established, reputable company, but would recommend researching varieties and planting methods at online edu sites, and going to a trusted local nursery for crowns and advice.
