We used to have mostly barn owls around here, but now it's typically great horned owls. Often in autumn and winter I hear one outside at night going "HOO! HOO-HOO HOO!" :D They are surprisingly loud.

They like the big trees we have, some of which have dead limbs high up that the big birds like to roost one. Mostly that means owls, but occasionally hawks or vultures, and several times I've flushed a bald eagle out of the yard. I feel very flattered.
