California is a Mediterranean climate which is more of a rainy/dry pattern than spring/summer/winter/fall pattern. So its smaller waterways tend to be seasonal. But one of the cool things about that pattern is the wildflowers tend to boom all at once a week or two after a big rain. Here in Illinois it tends to be a few at a time from spring to fall.
