The ones I grew needed about 20 C to sprout/bloom (a bit less to sprout, true, but until a considerable part of the day is 20+ C, they won't move), so I strongly recommend starting them indoors and transplanting only once it's warm enough. Luckily, they *do* survive sudden chills (say - a week at 10 C) but take ages to recover. Maybe in England there could be cold-resistant hybrids?

They need acid soil - you might want to check both soil and water.

My patch of Unknown Variety grew in a container - they've been since transplanted, but AFAIK were pretty happy (if a bit cramped) there. My experience with varieties like Tulamen has been mostly negative due to their scarce reproduction (one "sprout", if any), so they might be a better fit for your garden, since they're unlikely to , ahem, take over?
